Perhaps a wedding is one of the most beautiful events in life and in cinema. You watch the film for one or two hours, and here is the finale: a chic ceremony, joyful guests, and a beautiful bride in a dazzling outfit.
Screen images of brides are copied, and dresses are sewn especially to order to look at least a little like their idol.
Today I will show you 18 wedding dresses in movies and tv shows that have become a source of inspiration for modern brides.
Graceful wedding dresses in cinema.
1 Gene Tierney in Oleg Cassini, Razor’s Edge (1946)
Gene Tierney can be called the young angel of black and white cinema. She was impressed with her grace and played exceptional beauties in noir.
Interestingly, in Razor’s Edge, we see her in a wedding dress that her husband, designer Oleg Cassini, made for her.
The dress was put together of lace, featuring a high mandarin collar and long-fitting sleeves with shirring details in front of both bodice and skirt. The gown is column-shaped with a longer hem at the back, serving as a small train.
Remarkably, the actress and designer broke up in the same year, but not forever.
2 Grace Kelly in dress by costume designer Helen Rose, High Society (1956)
Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, as well as musician Louis Armstrong, play the leading roles in the second film, High Society. Impressive cast!
By the way, for Grace Kelly, it was her last film work.
On the actress, we see an incomparable dress with a sweetheart neckline and flowers in the fringing.
The ladies secretly bit their elbows, and the men, leaving their companions, looked with all their eyes at the beautiful bride Tracy, expressing their admiration.
Her triumph is, in fact, the result of the fine work of designer Helen Rose. The famous costume designer managed to create a dress that harmoniously matched the image and character of the heroine.
3 Audrey Hepburn in Hubert Givenchy, Funny Face (1957)
It so happened that Audrey married twice in her life. But the Hollywood star was remembered as a real bride in a wedding dress only in the movie Funny Face.
The satin and tulle dress was created by the founder of the Givenchy fashion house, Hubert de Givenchy.
It was a white dress with an hourglass silhouette and open ankles, which has long remained in the history of fashion as a standard of beauty and grace.
Light, swift, like a hummingbird, Audrey looked like a fairy princess in it, conquering millions of viewers with her charm.
And for the film, Audrey pinned a veil to her dress like a hood and painted her lips with carrot lipstick.
4 Vanessa Redgrave in dress by costume designer John Truscott, Camelot (1967)
One of the most unusual dresses was worn by Guinevere, the bride of King Arthur, played by Vanessa Redgrave.
The titanic work of twelve craftswomen, who have been crocheting a wedding dress for more than a month, is worthy of respect and admiration.
Add here another eleven-meter train, decorated with mother-of-pearl shells and pumpkin seeds, and you will understand what a feat these women accomplished for the audience’s sake.
For his masterpiece, costume designer John Truscott received an American Academy Award. Note also that the royal wedding dress was estimated at 12 thousand dollars.
5 Barbra Streisand in Donna Karan, Funny Girl (1968)
In Funny Girl, Barbara Streisand’s character appears in a luxurious wedding dress by celebrity fashion designer Donna Karan with a hidden pillow on her belly.
By the way, it was the finest hour of the actress herself: this film brought her worldwide fame.
I read a lot of different reviews on this dress. In particular, for modern brides, such a gown will sound like too much. There are three types of flowers (on the dress, wreath, and bouquet), two types of lace (on the veil and the dress), as well as active shiny satin fabric of the dress itself.
But I can’t help myself and love this look of Barbara Streisand very much.
6 Jane Seymour, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, TV series, 1993–1998.
This series was filmed over 20 years ago, but much of it remains relevant. In particular, you may like the wedding dress.
At the wedding, the doctor appeared in a puffy dress in a dramatic style, surrounded by flowers.
This dress is suitable for those girls who have dreamed of a lush lace dress since childhood.
7 Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma (1996)
In this film, we see Gwyneth Paltrow in a simple but sweet wedding dress.
Emma’s appeal was made in the Napoleonic Empire style. Fashion designers made it from soft flowing muslin fabric without a corset.
The shirt cut of the wedding dress slightly resembled a nightgown. This style is so popular to this day. And Emma was highly seductive in it.
8 Natalie Portman in Trisha Biggar dress, A Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones (2002)
At her wedding, young Portman, in the image of Padme, was in an unusual dress made of lace and beads.
Costume designer Trisha Biggar has made a truly magical creation. Once, she miraculously got an old veil made of yellowed lace from time to time. It was from him, according to Biggar’s plan, that the wedding dress for the bride was sewn.
By the way, the craftswomen wove 300 meters of silk cord for the decor. Padmé Amidala looked exotic and spectacular in this wedding dress. And her head was covered with a veil of Maltese lace, wax flowers, and pearl rosettes.
9 Keira Knightley wears dress by Penny Rose, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
We did not see a chic wedding in the film, but we remembered Keira Knightley’s wedding dress.
A golden dress made of taffeta and brocade with many draperies and rich embroidery has become the envy and desire of many young girls – future brides.
For the bride’s dress, costume designer Penny Rose chose not classic white but chic gold. A brocade dress with many draperies and rich embroidery fully corresponded to the bride’s era and status.
10 Emily Blunt in a dress by costume designer Sandy Powell, Young Victoria (2009)
This film won the Oscar and BAFTA in the Best Costumes category, which is quite natural. Costume designer Sandy Powell has meticulously thought through everything to the smallest detail.
A chaste lace outfit with puffy sleeves, and a thin waist, complemented by a sprig of orange flowers, was terrific. The skirt was decorated with lace, and the train was embroidered with silk flowers.
An antique cream-colored silk veil complimented the outfit, and jewelry included a chain with St. George, a necklace, earrings with crystals, and a large brooch with a sapphire stone.
This gown is a replica of the actual dress worn by Queen Victoria on February 10, 1840, when she married Prince Albert.
11 Kirsten Dunst in a dress by danish costume designer Manon Rasmussen, Melancholia (2011)
In a wedding dress decorated with flowers, baroque touches, a plunging neckline, and a princess veil, Justine is a real highlight of the film.
This model has elements of the Greek style (draperies, light layering, open shoulders). But the dress looks quite traditional due to the veil and lace.
Despite the rather magnificent model of the dress and the presence of a veil, it looks appropriate, since minimalism is taken as the basis. Lace, which in some cases can make the image heavier, is thin and light here.
This wedding dress by designer Manon Rasmussen also emphasizes the inner state of the heroine of the picture. Therefore, the weak and sad smile of the bride in a magnificent wedding dress leads the sensitive viewer into some despondency, turning into a melancholy state.
12 Sarah Jessica Parker in Vivienne Westwood, Sex and the City (2008)
Carrie’s dream dress, favor of which she chose from several options, was complemented by an extravagant blue bird in her hair and a long veil.
The outfit itself is very decent. It was executed with high quality and with an idea. The color of the delicate creme brulee goes well with the skin tone of the actress, and the style also looks proportional. The only thing I didn’t really like was the veil. It emphasizes the elongated face of the actress
Vivienne Westwood created this wedding dress for Carrie in 2007 as part of the autumn-winter Cave Girl collection. Immediately after the film’s release, a simplified midi-length model appeared on net-a-porter.com and was sold in a couple of hours (the price was about $10,000).
The cost of the original version started at $15,700 and increased depending on the fabric and shade. It could be ordered at the Vivienne Westwood boutique in London if you are willing to wait six months.
13 Amanda Seyfried and costume designer Anna Roth, Mamma mia! (2008)
The emerald waves of the Aegean Sea inspired the famous costume designer Anna Roth so much that she created a fabulous wedding dress for the heroine of the musical Sophie.
Sophie’s casual dress reflects the free spirit she inherited from her mother, Donna, who raised her daughter in Greece.
The whipped-cream tulle dress, made in hippie style and embroidered with delicate flowers, looked fabulous. And the charming bride walked barefoot along the shore, proudly raising her lovely head, framed by a wreath of fresh flowers.
14 Kristen Stewart in Carolina Herrera. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, 2011
No matter how you feel about the vampire saga, you must admit that the stylist team’s selection of Bella Swan’s wedding dress was done well.
A satin dress with lace inserts and an open back for the film was created by the brand Carolina Herrera. Immediately after the release of the third part of the film, the wedding label Alfred Angelo copied the design and made a replica, which it sold for $799 before filing for bankruptcy in June 2017.
The mermaid-style silk dress was made of snow-white silk, trimmed with French lace and 152 buttons. Its minimalist front is paired with a lace cutout at the back.
The wedding scene in this film cost the producers $70,000, half of which was spent on this particular dress.
15 Michelle Dockery wears Caroline McCall, Downton Abbey (2010-2015)
Downton Abbey is made with such love and with such attention to detail. It can easily be studied as an encyclopedia of the life of the upper-class people of that time.
Mary Crawley’s wedding dress was elegant and as aristocratic as possible, as required by the traditions of that era. The unique bride’s gown was handmade, especially for the series filming, with a beautiful costume by Caroline McCall.
The outfit turned out to be very high-status: long sleeves, a conservative neckline, patterns of silver threads, and pearl beads with Swarovski crystals. A luxurious tiara made of antique diamonds added elegance.
16 Julia Roberts in Eiko Ishioka, Snow White: Revenge of the Dwarves (2012).
This version of the famous fairy tale was a pleasant surprise. The colorful comedy stands out against the dark stories of Snow White.
In each frame, we see bright scenery and matching costumes. The dresses of the main characters seem to be drawn. Shiny fabrics, embroidery, incredible decor – you haven’t seen such Snow White yet.
The legendary Eiko Ishioka created the outfits. Unfortunately, she did not live to see the premiere and did not see her creations on the big screen. Nevertheless, she was awarded an Oscar for her work.
More than others, her wedding dress of the evil queen is striking. It consists of sharp triangles vaguely resembling feathers. The armor effect is created. The bride is not as innocent as it seems and is ready to win back her interests.
The dress weighed almost 30 kilograms, and the skirt circumference reached 2.5 meters. In such ammunition, Julia Roberts could not move on her own. Instead, she had a team of assistants who helped move the structure.
Honestly, it is one of my favorite wedding dresses in movies!
17 Jennifer Lawrence in a dress by Indonesian designer Tex Saverio, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013).
Although the dress of the heroine Jennifer Lawrence is not a wedding dress, it cannot be ignored.
Most of the outfits for the film were designed by Alexander McQueen, but the wedding dress was co-designed by costume designer Trish Summerville with Indonesian designer Tex Saverio.
The snow-white outfit of organza and chiffon is decorated with something like a metal mesh and looks elegant. Many layers of organza and chiffon turned the bottom of the dress into sea foam, while Swarovski crystals made the outfit even more luxurious.
And where without surprises? In just a few seconds, the dress disappears into flames, and Katniss is left in a Mockingjay costume – a symbol of a future revolution.
Jay’s costume turned out to be so popular after the film’s release. Many brides began to order the dress from the Hunger Games as their wedding dress. And among cosplayers, it is still considered one of the most popular!
18 Margot Wilson and Marion Boyce costume designers, The Dressmaker (2015)
I really love the wedding image of Gertrude from the movie The Dressmaker.
A simple and concise white dress with an embellishment on the belt looks exquisite. The idea is complemented by beautiful red lipstick, a bright green bouquet, and the heroine`s shining red hair.
The dressmaker movie is just a storehouse of memorable costumes! The work of the costume designers for the painting is admirable.
19 Dakota Johnson in Monique Lhuillier, Fifty Shades Freed (2018)
Anastacia Steele’s wedding dress was designed by Filipino American designer Monique Lhuillier, the founder of Monique Lhuillier, the world-famous brand of wedding and evening dresses.
Is it worth remembering how brides from all over the world tried to get their hands on the legendary dress of Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City” by Vivienne Westwood or Bella Swan from “Twilight” by Carolina Herrera? When creating Anastacia’s apparel, the designer took into account the fact that the outfit would become iconic. So she made this appeal as classic as possible with a splash of modern elements.
According to the script of the film, the wedding dress of the bride of the multi-billionaire should be incredibly luxurious. At the same time, we must not forget that the newlywed is the most ordinary girl, a student who works part-time in a building materials store. At the same time, the outfit should emphasize the hidden sexual potential of the modest Anastacia.
Down the aisle, the heroine of Dakota Johnson went in both feminine and sexy dress with bare shoulders and an impressive train. Lace from France and a large amount of tulle were used as the primary materials.
A laconic lace dress, on the one hand, looks restrained, but at the same time, it catches the eye with piquant details – a series of small buttons on the back, creating a more seductive silhouette, and a boat neckline that reveals the thin collarbones of the actress. The fragility and tenderness of the image are also emphasized by the silhouette of the dress, which is called fit-and-flare.
