Old Money is back in fashion – healthy tans, polo shirts, white shorts, villas, yachts and family jewels.
To be honest, I’m not rich, but this style really attracts me. After six years of being a lady in leggings on the playground, I’m ready to change my style to a more elegant one.
Today, I am sharing my list of films with Old Money outfits. Each tape can be divided into trendy looks. These movies attract those interested in fashion, old money aesthetics, or who love good pictures.
Old Money style in movies.
The Talented Mr. Ripley, 1999
The main character, Tom Ripley, is obsessed with achieving wealth and success. Fate favors him, and after a chance acquaintance with an American billionaire, Tom is tasked with finding his unlucky son in Europe and returning him to the bosom of his family.
Anthony Minghella’s film is perhaps an absolute icon of the old money style—and for good reason! Snow-white suits, expensive and elegant dresses, silk robes, trousers with suspenders—this is something that all adherents of the Old Money aesthetic should note.
To Catch a Trief, 1954
The Cat, a retired thief living in a villa in Nice, finds out that someone is framing him for a string of robberies in fancy homes in Southern France. Intending to catch the robber himself and divert suspicion from himself, the Cat finds out the names of the richest families in the area and soon meets a mother and daughter who have a whole collection of jewelry.
To Catch a Thief is called Alfred Hitchcock’s most glamorous film. Its impeccable visuals are filled with luxury cars, dynamic chases, magnificent landscapes of sunlit Nice, sophisticated manners, beautiful women and other signs of a luxurious life. And all this against a general ironic background.
Grace Kelly is considered one of the icons of elegant style, and in this film, she will delight you with beautiful looks.
Grace of Monaco, 2014
A fairy tale happened in Grace Kelly’s life —a girl from Philadelphia married a handsome prince. Together with his hand, heart, and title, she received all the problems associated with this high position in politics.
In this film, we see the beautiful Grace Kelly through the eyes of Nicole Kidman. This delightful movie blends drama, biopic, and romance to transport you to the world of old money.
Costume designer Gigi Lepage researched Grace Kelly’s favorite brands to create the film’s outfits and made replicas of her most famous dresses and accessories, including the Hermes bag named after the actress.
Pretty Woman, 1990
It is one of the girliest films, combining all the romance genre stereotypes: a fairy-tale plot, a handsome prince, and a bright main character who changes everyone around her.
The magic of this film is not only its Disney ending but also the excellent work of the costume designers. All the clothes Julia Roberts wore on camera are still relevant today and will be attractive for another few decades.
I suggest leaving patent leather boots and micros for Halloween and using your inspiration to make an elegant component of the “new Vivian.” Everything screams old money aesthetics: a classic dress for the opera, a cocktail dress for a restaurant, snow-white cotton shirts, and the iconic brown midi with white polka dots.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E, 2015
An American spy and a Soviet K.G.B. agent must work together to save the world from terrorists.
I think this film can rightfully be called one of the most stylish spy action films of our time. It competently reflected the atmosphere of 1960s thrillers and created the perfect trail of “old money” style for this story. Real aristocrats are seen in thoughtful images in vibrant and convincing settings like lavish mansions, yachts, and upscale bars. Each stripe on the main character’s costume exudes luxury and wealth. The film is worth watching, if only for this indescribable atmosphere.
Jackie, 2016
November 22, 1963, Dallas. After the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline tries to survive this terrible event.
Jacqueline Kennedy’s unmistakable elegance characterizes every look she wears, from casual pantsuits to formal dresses. The First Lady of the United States conquered the world with her images and remained a style icon even after 90 years.
Without a doubt, Natalie Portman brilliantly plays this charismatic woman in all the complexity of her character. She subtly and sincerely conveys all her experiences and mood changes, that loneliness in the middle of the crowd, and she will, which does not allow her to break, although, in these difficult days, she was more than once on the verge.
Blue Jasmine, 2013
In Woody Allen’s drama, a socialite who has lost money and status continues to be an example of the Old Money style despite difficulties and changes in life. Laconic outfits in beige shades and strict accessories support her usual lifestyle.
Blanchett’s Jasmine is a complex, multifaceted figure, and her performance elevates a perfect film to a whole new level. The heroine is selfish, arrogant, weak, and depressed. She is still charming and elegant despite having only four Louis Vuitton suitcases from all her past splendor.
This film will show how elegance and refinement can effortlessly mix with the everyday routines of regular folks in a typical neighborhood.
Spencer, 2021
Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ unit is bursting at the seams. Evil tongues gossip about an affair and predict divorce. However, during the Christmas holidays at the Sandringham estate, the royal family shows peace. They eat and drink at the same table and traditionally go hunting. But will Diana be able to continue this game?
Princess Diana is another icon of elegant style. In this film, we will see Kristen Stewart trying on Princess Diana’s outfits. The Chilean director turned the story of her life in the royal family into a parable about the weight of the tiara.
It is the most controversial movie about Princess Diana and does not pretend to be authentic. But the film is very beautifully shot with elegant and expensive looks. Also, there are great movies, Diana (2013) and the serial Crown, if you have time to watch 6 seasons.
