My Lady Jane Series Review: A Unique Blend of Humor, Romance and Magic.

I just finished watching the series My Lady Jane yesterday. After three depressing dramas, this show became a pill of laughter for the soul!

I found out about this movie entirely by accident from social media. In one of the communities, the participants were very outraged that the King of England was made a sick black man and that the series contained vulgar jokes. And even then, this show interested me.

Is My Lady Jane worth watching? If you read my post to the end, you will want to give this show a chance.

My Lady Jane series plot.

So, in 16th century Britain, after Henry VIII had chopped off the heads of all his undesirable wives and died himself, we find his son Edward VI on the English throne – and he is black. But who would be surprised by this now? 

Edward is wasting away from a mysterious illness. It will soon become clear that someone is methodically poisoning the poor guy. He names Jane Grey, Henry VII’s great-granddaughter and his bosom friend, as his successor to the throne.

The historical Jane Grey of Scotland’s Tudor line only reigned nine days in July 1553. She was then deposed and executed along with her husband, Guildford Dudley, by Henry VIII’s true daughter, Mary I, who had adopted his love of beheadings and was later dubbed Bloody Mary. Lady Jane became an object of worship during the Romantic era and was elevated to a moral standard in the Victorian era as a martyr, a faithful wife, and the “Tudor rose.”

In the current series, young Jane is the ideal feminist: a cheerful and willful girl who categorically does not want to get married but understands herbs and successfully treats the shameful diseases of the servants who have gone on a spree with ointments. But her domineering mother forcibly marries her to Lord Dudley’s son – a handsome playboy Guildford – to improve the family’s shaky financial situation. How will it all end? See for yourself!

The format of the show is ideal – only 8 episodes of 30 minutes.

The series is only partly historical. Historical characters are preserved, but we are shown an alternative development of events: how the events of that time could have developed differently.  You will not only see an alternative history but also meet a fantasy world. In addition to people, there are magical creatures – Izians. They can turn into animals. Naturally, people and Izians are at odds.

I think “negative” characters are very interesting in this show. And I really liked Bloody Mary and her man, Lord Seymour. 

They are the ones who slowly poison Edward’s black brother with poison and try to drive Jane and all her little animals out of this world. Mary is acting up, intriguing, shooting a crossbow at moving live targets, making scandals, and making faces. In general, she behaves like a normal British politician. The tradition of ridiculing one’s historical figures, and at the same time the course of history they set, exists in the British TV series; “My Lady Jane” is presented in all its glory.

The cast is terrific! All the actors played very well. I loved Emily Bader (Lady Jane) with her big eyes and shiny cheeks. And I definitely want to find more movies with Edward Bluemel ( Lord Guildford).

The first season’s ending is very touching, with a pledge for a continuation, which will not happen. Unfortunately, Amazon Prime Video canceled My Lady Jane, mainly because it didn’t attract enough viewers.

Is My Lady Jane worth watching?

If you like blood and gore, you’d love Tudor parties, says the voiceover, accompanying the series events with ironic comments. The Tudors have always been a regular source of plots for British screenwriters, but often, the adaptations turned out to be costume soap operas with an erotic slant. This time, the authors turned to 16th-century British history to introduce a progressive agenda: feminism and blind casting. 

For me, My Lady Jane is a project in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ or ‘Shrek’ style. Historical costumed realities here serve as an impressive backdrop for the funny adventures of the heroes. The voiceover directly says that a funny fiction will unfold before the audience on the topic of what would happen if… Moreover, the struggle for the throne is not the central theme of My Lady Jane. Even more significant here is the unexpected love story of the main character.

To sum up, My Lady Jane is a hilarious and easygoing show. It features characters of color in roles that might raise some eyebrows, a good dose of LGBTQ+ themes, a bunch of raunchy jokes, and some intimate moments between an older lady and a younger man. However, if you enjoy the idea of blending historical figures with contemporary humor, you’ll find it entertaining.

I am finishing this post and am a little envious of those who have not yet watched this fairy tale for adults. It’s packed with palace intrigue, a fascinating world, themes of love and loyalty, childhood issues, and some really motivating speeches and actions.
