I won’t lie if I say we all need to add a little beauty to our lives. Today, I’m sharing 16 movies with stunning visuals and will focus on romance movies and dramas.

Some films’ beauty, atmosphere, and sensuality are simply off the charts.  These pictures will please even the most sophisticated aesthetes.

Visually stunning romance movies.

Her, 2013

  • Save

Theodore, a lonely writer, buys a new technical development – an operating system designed to fulfill any user’s desire. To Theodore’s surprise, a romance soon grows between him and the operating system.

For me, this film is a real work of art. Everything is so harmonious and beautiful that you don’t want to take your eyes off the screen even for a second—warm colors, stunning views of the city full of skyscrapers, and great composition of the frame. It is just a sight for sore eyes! Everything here is thought out to the smallest detail.

I have already written a review for this movie – Is it possible to fall in love with A.I.?

Hail, Caesar!, 2016

  • Save

There is an important event at the Capital Pictures film studio: they are making a film that has every chance of becoming a sensation and the main premiere of the year. But in the midst of filming, a strange thing happens: the actor playing the leading role disappears into nowhere. After some time, it becomes clear that he was taken hostage by the mysterious organization “Future,” which is demanding a ransom.

This film is doubly good: first, it is a comedy from the incomparable Coen brothers, and second, it is pleasing to the eye. Artists and screenwriters accurately recreated the atmosphere of a Hollywood film studio in all its splendor in the 30s–50s of the 20th century.

Cruella, 2021

  • Save

Great Britain, 1960s. It is a fascinating story of the formation and shocking benefit performance of a stunning villainess who conquers the fashion world.

From the visual side, the picture looks incredibly impressive. The scenery of backstage London in the 1970s—its gateways, abandoned houses, and the fountain in Regent’s Park—is captivating with its atmosphere. The camera work more than emphasizes everything that surrounds the characters, adding a certain flavor to what is happening and making the city a full-fledged character in the story.

And, of course, if you are interested in fashion, you will undoubtedly get a visual thrill from every image of Cruella or the Baroness.

Amélie. 2001

Amelie’s childhood was strange and lonely. Due to an imaginary illness and a heart defect, she was not allowed to go to school and began inventing her peculiar world. Therefore, she grew up as an unusual and naive girl who believed in miracles. When Amelie started working in a cafe, she realized she could change people’s destinies. From now on, this became her calling.

The Amelie is a charming journey into the world of magic and tenderness, where every frame seems to be permeated with magic. The visual performance of the film leaves no one indifferent. Jeunet’s camera brings a unique Paris filled with colors and emotions to the screen.

Memoirs of a Geisha, 2005

‘The father sells his daughters after the death of their mother, and Chio ends up in the service of geishas. The girl, who has reached the age of 12, is noticed by the geisha Mameha, who redeems her. Now, this girl should become the best of the geishas…

The film is so beautiful that it takes your breath away. The picture is slow, but it is a gift to an attentive, grateful viewer who drinks it like precious fragrant tea in small sips, savoring each one and prolonging the pleasure. The competition among geishas is shown superbly. Sayuri’s dance, which marked the birth of a legend, shocked my imagination. As if under hypnosis, I looked at the girl’s movements with an umbrella, forgetting to blink and breathe.

Brooklyn, 2015

After graduating from school, Eilis Lacey had the chance to move to New York from a small Irish town. As a result, she settles in Brooklyn, acquires a profession and gradually recovers from nostalgia. But news from her homeland forces the girl to return to Ireland, and the heroine is forced to choose between her and America.

The film will undoubtedly appeal to picky aesthetes who love atmospheric films and ordinary girls who want a love story. This sentimental and dreamily naive picture is designed in the old storytelling style. Every frame is imbued with the spirit of America of the 50s: manners, speech, clothing, behavior, and makeup.

House of Flying Daggers, 2004

  • Save

A secret agent of the imperial police who is hunting for the rebel movement’s leaders wins the trust of the rebel leader’s daughter but then falls into a trap.

It is a magnificent, charming film with stunning costumes, unforgettable battle scenes, and one of the most tragic love stories. I have already given three reasons why you should watch this film. Believe me, this tape is really worth your attention.

Visually appealing dramas.

The Danish Girl, 2015

1920s, Copenhagen. Illustrator and artist Gerda Wegener asks her husband to pose as a female model. Portraits became popular, and Gerda continued to paint with her husband as a woman. The husband likes his feminine appearance and begins living under the name Lili Elbe. Elbe subsequently becomes the first person to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

This film absorbs and fascinates with atmospheric and aesthetic shots. I admire the heroes’ dresses, shoes, hairstyles, costumes, and detailed appearance. In this film, you will want to catch every moment and not just listen to the background.

My Week with Marilyn, 2011

The incredible, sexy, and legendary Marilyn Monroe is heading to England to film a new film. She charms and captivates everyone, including the young assistant director Colin. But how does Marilyn herself feel? Could she fall in love with an inexperienced young man? And what is it like to be Marilyn Monroe?

It is just a charming picture that is shot in such a way that you always feel like the third in their company. It’s as if you were also taken on adventures with the characters or into their bed.

Crimson Peak, 2015

Wealthy heiress, Edith marries bankrupt aristocrat Thomas. After the sudden death of her father, the heroine moves to her lover in his family mansion, where he lives with his sister. Frightening rustles, incomprehensible prohibitions and strange visions prompt the girl to think that it is not for nothing that the locals are shunning her new home.

“Crimson Peak is my most beautiful film,” director Guillermo del Toro says. And this is true. Each frame of the film is verified and brought to perfection, and the film itself is created according to all the canons of Gothic melodrama. There are ghosts, an old mansion, and the frightening presence of some terrible secret.

The Dressmaker, 2015

  • Save

A glamorous woman returns to her hometown, where she left as a child after being accused of murder. The town’s residents do not accept her at first, but gradually, she wins the favor of the local ladies thanks to her wit and ability to cut impeccable outfits.

Besides the thrilling storyline, this movie has an absolutely stunning visual aesthetic. The intricate scenery, especially the mirror tree, is beautifully captured on screen, making even a city landfill look like a work of art. The 50s fashion trends showcased in The Dressmaker are truly groundbreaking, with bold and daring outfits, elegant gloves, cigarette holders, and vibrant red lipstick.

Check out my The Dressmaker movie analysis if you are interested in this film.

The Fountain, 2006

Thomas Creo is searching for the Tree of Life, the sap of which, as legends say, bestows eternal life. Thomas needs to save his terminally ill wife, Isabel.

The Fountain is incredible visually. Repeating and rhyming symbols—the tree of life, the ring, stars, candles, lamps, a ray in the dark, and snow—create a deep and beautiful visual canvas for the film.

The same musical theme is present throughout the film—the same touching, dramatic, sad, and slightly dragging motif wonderfully conveying the film’s style, mood, and atmosphere. It is a unique, deep, and very soulful movie.

This film is beyond ratings.

The Great Gatsby, 2013

USA, 1922. Nick Carraway, a fresh-faced worker on Wall Street, leases a home in a trendy New York suburb. Across the bay resides his cousin Daisy Buchanan, trapped in a miserable marriage. One fateful day, Nick crosses paths with Jay Gatsby, an enigmatic millionaire known for hosting lavish parties at his mansion.

A dazzling adaptation of the novel by American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. If you want to plunge into the atmosphere of luxurious parties of the 20s of the last century, be sure to watch this film.

The Grand Budapest Hotel, 2014

The elderly Madame D. dies under mysterious circumstances. She bequeaths an expensive painting to her lover, the senior concierge of the Grand Budapest Hotel, Monsieur Gustav. But the son of the deceased wants to keep the portrait for himself at all costs. And Gustav and his young bellhop assistant, Zero, have to take part in a crazy adventure to receive his rightful inheritance.

Of course, any Wes Anderson film deserves to be in this selection. But the baroque interiors of the Grand Budapest will not leave any aesthete indifferent. It’s not for nothing that three of the four Oscars were awarded to the film specifically for its visual component.

Life of Pi, 2012

Boy Pi’s family moves from India to Canada on a cargo ship, encountering a terrible storm and sinks. The boy is placed in a lifeboat and evacuated. The following day, when the boy comes to his senses, it turns out that he and the zoo animals, including a tiger, are the only ones left on the boat.

Director Ang Lee managed the impossible—to make a film based on a book that, it would seem, could not be filmed. Ultimately, we saw a colorful film parable that immerses the viewer in an incredible adventure and amazes with its philosophical overtones. If you haven’t watched this tape yet, please do. This is a real extravaganza.

Melancholia, 2011

This film by Lars Von Trier is both incredibly beautiful and endlessly sad. It tells the story of the last days of the Earth as the sisters wait for a global catastrophe and prepare to accept it.

The beauty of the film is visual and obvious, and it is difficult not to enjoy the picture-like landscape and the perfection of the mysterious blue killer planet. The three pillars of this film’s imagery—color, music, and silence—achieve a unique atmosphere.

  • This is an awesome list! I have seen many of these movies but a few I haven’t seen yet. I am bookmarking this to remember those I haven’t seen. Thanks

  • The only movie on this list that I’ve seen is Amelie. I do have Life of PI in my collection, so maybe it’s time to dust off the blu ray and check it out.

  • Visuals in movies can make such a difference to how much we enjoy them. I’ve not seen quite a few of these. I read Memoirs of a Geisha years ago but didn’t know they did a film. I must try to watch that asap.

  • These movies are visual feasts! Each frame captivates, making storytelling a visual symphony. Sharing this with movie buff friends. BTW which film’s visuals resonated most with you?

  • I haven’t seen any on your list! However, I did read Memoirs of a Geisha, which was very memorable. I will have to check out that movie and some others.

  • Wow, this is a great list, and I’m not even referring to the aesthetics. I would like to check on that Soairse movie, Brooklyn, and Marilyn, Dressmaker and Crimson peak.

I think Cruella’s on Prime, so I can access that. Also, The Great Gatsby should either be in Prime, Netflix or HBO Go. I’ve seen Life of Pi, which was fantastic, and Memoirs of a Geisha.
