17 great action movies with romance.
Ghosted, 2023.
Cole falls in love with the mysterious Sadie, but it turns out that she is a secret agent. Before they can go on a second date, Cole and Sadie go on an adventure to save the world.
This movie has everything in one bottle, like 3 in 1: action, romance, and even a little comedy. What’s surprising is that Ana de Armas is responsible for the action, and Chris Evans is responsible for the comedy and romance, and they both cope with their task.
Parker, 2012.
The main character is a professional thief, guided by his moral code, but capable of quickly sending anyone who crosses his path to the next world.
Always a lone hero, this time the producers “broke the system” and gave Statham Jennifer Lopez as a partner. She slightly dilutes the general atmosphere of an extremely male action movie, making it a little sexy, I would even say, daring. A series of bloody scenes, chases, fights and shootouts are an enjoyable element of the video sequence. They are filmed and staged very professionally.
This picture will never receive the glory of Bond films, but Statham and Lopez fans will be heartily pleased.
This Means War, 2012.
CIA agents and best friends Franklin Foster and Tuck Henson go to Hong Kong to catch international criminal Heinrich. During the mission, the terrorist’s brother dies, and Heinrich himself escapes. Both agents are suspended from duty. They return to civilian life, but soon, a war begins between friends because of the sexy beauty Laurent. Meanwhile, the terrorist is thinking up a plan for revenge.
Right away – the film exceeded all my expectations! Of course, I knew it was a comedy, but there were a lot of good jokes here. Add to this the action and love melodrama! There is also a good cast, and Reese Witherspoon is always charming.
The Tourist, 2010.
An American tourist, Frank, comes to Italy to heal his emotional wound. In Venice, he meets an unusual woman named Elise. The wounded heart seems ready to surrender to a new lover. However, Frank and Eliza’s plans are rudely disrupted by a whirlpool of intrigue and danger.
This movie is not American. It is a little old-fashioned, unhurried, and reminiscent of old detective stories with beautiful strangers. You will see Venice, a luxurious hotel, beautiful people, a ball, a chase, villains, heroes, and love. It’s nice to watch and easy to forget.
Jolie looks simply enchanting, merging with the interior so much that she becomes a part of it, if not the most important part. Few people can walk as regal and mysterious as she can, in the most exquisite dresses and jewelry, delighting with dizzying hairstyles and batting breathtaking eyelashes.
Killers, 2010.
Spencer was a ruthless hired killer, a scourge of world terrorism, until he met Jen in the elevator of a resort hotel. Three years later, they are an ordinary young couple living in the American suburbs. But their cloudless happiness comes to an end when a reward of $20 million is announced for Spencer’s head, and all the deeply undercover professional killers begin to hunt him. Will the heroes be able to “guess” the killers among their neighbors, colleagues, acquaintances, and friends to survive? Will Jen forgive her husband for the “killer truth”?
The plot is incredibly silly, but that’s okay in this case. The movie turned out to be summery, easy, and feel-good—all in the style of Heigl and Kutcher.
Troy, 2004.
1193 BC. Paris has stolen the beautiful Helen, the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. Menelaus’s brother, King Agamemnon, stands up for his honor. His army, led by Achilles, approaches Troy and takes the city in a bloody siege that lasts ten years. Two worlds will fight for honor and power. Thousands will die for glory.
Of all the large-scale historical epics, I put Troy first. The overall dynamics of the action, the superb filming, and the acting of Bana, Bloom, Pitt, O’Toole, and everyone else are at the highest level. Battles, ships, great cities of antiquity… All this is captivating from the first seconds and does not let you tear yourself away from the screen. Of course, ‘Troy’ can’t be called a 100% historical film, but who now knows how everything happened 3 thousand years ago?
And, of course, the thread of love runs through the whole story. There are three different love stories.
The Mask of Zorro, 1998.
The plot is based on the events of 1821 when the lives of ordinary people had no value. Then, a brave defender of the disadvantaged and oppressed appeared on the horizon – Zorro. The robber, hiding his face under a black mask, gets on the nerves of the authorities. His head is valued at a fabulous sum, but it is impossible to catch him. However, the vile and vengeful Don Montero manages to send his offender to prison. Only after two decades does Zorro leave the dungeon. Now, he has one goal – to find a worthy successor.
It’s just a gorgeous film! Everything is thought out to the smallest detail—the plot, the characters, the music, the romance, the battles. Amazing music touches you to tears. Landscapes make your heart stop and your head spin. Costumes overshadow their beauty, making you want to live in that time and try them on yourself.
The Last of the Mohicans, 1992.
1757. The Anglo-French War for the American colonies is in full swing. Colonel Munro’s daughters are trying to get into the English fort besieged by the French. A young white hunter, Hawkeye, comes to their aid. A mutual feeling flares up between Hawkeye, who grew up among the Mohican Indians, and the eldest of the daughters, the refined Cora. But Cora and her sister are captured by the French allies, the Hurons, and only Hawkeye and his loyal friends, the Indians, can save them from a painful death…
The film is beautiful with the beauty of high human relations, great patience and humility, courage and fortitude, devotion and loyalty that people keep until the end of their days. And, of course, The Last of the Mohicans is beautiful with its amazingly accurate, truthful historical coloring of forests, waterfalls and rocks, military fortresses and battles, capitulations, skirmishes with bloodthirsty Indians and the harsh life of the first settlers.
I loved Daniel Day-Lewis’s performance in this movie. He is the only male actor who has three Oscars for the male leading role. Check out my post Why is Day-Lewis the best actor of our time to learn more.
Allied, 2016.
1942. During a dangerous mission in North Africa, intelligence officer Max meets resistance member Marianne. They will experience many ups and downs, but the biggest challenge will be facing the truth.
Brad Pitt’s fantastic acting talent and Marion Cotillard have discovered a wonderful ability to express honest feelings, the truthfulness of which leaves no doubt. The tragic situation in which the confused spouses are plunged is truly touching. It is a stunning film; you will not regret it.
A Knight’s Tale, 2001.
He did not obey any rules, for he was created to break them. After the death of his master, servant William decides on a desperate adventure. The young man manages to change his lineage and appropriates the armor and weapons of his departed master. He appears before the public as a young and noble knight, Ulrich von Lichtenstein.
Now, in his new capacity, he must prove his noble origins in knightly tournaments with a spear and sword. But as a final test, passionate love is sent to the ardent heart of the great impostor, capable of knocking the most fearless warrior out of the saddle…
Sometimes, we all need little miracles, like the film A Knight’s Tale. It’s a light and colorful film for the soul. It’s absolutely wrong from a historical point of view, but that gives the film a unique charm.
Pompeii, 2014.
It is the love story of the enslaved person Milo and the noble Cassia, engaged to a Roman senator, against the backdrop of the eruption of Vesuvius, which forever wiped the ancient Roman city of Pompeii off the face of the earth.
Pompeii is, first of all, a bright action movie, and only then a story. What impresses and fascinates me most is the gladiator fight in the arena – bright, interesting, spectacular. The catastrophe horrifies and delights – splashes of bright orange lava, this volcano spitting fire like a dragon from legends – creepy and beautiful at the same time. Visually, there is simply nothing to complain about.
I recommend it to everyone who loves history, gladiators and forbidden love.
Date Night, 2010.
It is one of the best films that teaches how to revive love in marriage. The secret to success is simple: spend more time together and experience common bright adventures! Phil and Claire have been married for what seems like a hundred years. They are mired in monotonous days at a boring job and dull family evenings. To bring back the former passion, the spouses decide to go on a date, like before the wedding. Unable to book a table in a crowded restaurant, Claire becomes cunning and calls someone else’s name – the Tripplehorns, who booked a table but have yet to show up. Dinner is going quite well, but only until bandits come to Claire and Phil’s table and declare that they, the Tripplehorns, owe them something.
Two of the most popular comedians on American television couldn’t help but show off their best selves in one project. Steve Carell and Tina Fey are on fire in every frame, and their dialogue is a treasure trove of jokes of the highest quality, humor that knocks you off your feet.
Shotgun Wedding, 2022.
Darcy and Tom are preparing for a luxurious wedding on the island. They are slightly annoyed by the groom’s mother and the bride’s ex. But soon, the couple will understand these are just trifles: pirates burst into the ceremony and take the guests hostage. Darcy and Tom have to save everyone.
Be that as it may, this is a pure comedy. The heroes fight their fears throughout the film, simultaneously comprehending the main family truth – ‘in sorrow and joy.’ As a result, I recommend this tape for its beautiful locations and cheerfully sung family values.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith, 2005.
John and Jane Smith are an ordinary married couple going through a typical relationship crisis. Having forgotten how to talk to each other, they go to a psychologist who tries in vain to help them. However, problems at work manage to glue together the cracked boat of family happiness because John and Jane are professional killers who hid their occupations from each other until they were both given the order to eliminate a competitor.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is rightfully considered one of the best action films of its time and simply a film that entertains perfectly. It is an outstanding comedy for lovers with brilliant actors and a crazy script. The camera work is at a height approximately equal to the top of Everest.
Casino Royale, 2006.
Using a rich spy arsenal, James Bond duel with Le Chiffre, the financial genius of the criminal world. But the final battle against him can only be won by the power of the mind, and not on the battlefield but on the green baize of the Casino Royale.
Everything is filmed precisely as such a movie about a legendary agent should be filmed – with taste and elegance. In this part of the Bond series, we see a living person doing his job, which is extremely dangerous and difficult.
Eva Green was also a pleasant surprise. Her manner of communication with Bond brings something new to the film. Her arguments with Bond are based on his arrogance and the shower scene, which, in general, I consider to be some of the best ideas in the film.
Check out my article about Bond`s personality if love Bondiana.
Knight and Day, 2010.
A chance meeting at the airport between a lonely woman, June Havens, and a charming agent, Miller, leads to the fact that they have to travel around the world together, escaping from hired killers and trying to protect a powerful battery, a unique source of energy, from insidious villains.
Getting into countless scrapes and constantly being on the verge of death, June is constantly tormented by guesses about who her restless companion is – the savior of humanity, a traitor, or simply crazy…
Knight and Day is a film that does not need to be particularly picky since it was filmed so that viewers simply had a good time and fun. The chemistry between the main characters produces so much energy that it would be enough to heat several small European countries.
The Bodyguard, 1992.
Frank Farmer, a member of the Presidential Security Service, feels guilty because an assassination attempt was made on the president in his absence. He leaves the service and gets hired as a bodyguard for singer and actress Rachel Marron, who constantly receives threatening letters.
This film has indescribable charm, soul, and romantic atmosphere. It has an outstanding soundtrack by Alan Silvestri and great stars. Whitney Houston showed that she can be as talented an actress as a singer. And Kevin Costner is as inimitable as ever. Sometimes, even looking into his eyes, you immediately feel that this is a real person with the profession of “bodyguard.”
Final words.
I am sure these action romance movies will not let you get bored. Long evenings are created for watching stories in which the hero does everything to save his beloved woman or goes with her against the whole world.
